Path of democracy

Former plenary hall

The “Weg der Demokratie” (Path of democracy) through the former government district that was opened in Bonn on 21 May 2004 recalls the 50 year history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Starting at the Haus der Geschichte (House of the History) on the Museumsmeile (Museum Mile) a walk that takes between one and a half and two hours guides you past 18 representative sites at which German democracy was shaped. Amongst other things these include the Bundestag (the lower house of the German Federal Parliament), the Bundeskanzleramt (Office of the Federal Chancellor), “Langer Eugen” as the former house of deputies (now the
UN campus) or the Musem Koenig, in which the Parliamentary Council was ceremonially opened. Additional stations, for instance the Hofgartenwiese (a park) as a site of major demonstrations or the former party headquarters, are situated outside of the narrower path. Information boards with photographs and texts in German and English acquaint people with the political significance as well as the historical backgrounds of the places and refer to their current use. In addition 40 places of historical and political interest are marked out by small display boards with texts both within and outside of the federal government district. The presentation is rounded off by an information sheet and the website
