The Roman time

Gold mug of Fritzdorf

The latest archaeological excavations lead us to believe that Bonn was once a settlement by a ford over the Rhine and that it actually predates this period considerably, as testified by the discovery of the 14,000-year-old remains of a man and woman at Oberkassel. According to the latest findings, these two owned a dog, making this the world’s earliest pet on record. At least 6,000 years ago, the first inhabitants established a fortified settlement on the Venusberg. The name, Bonn, is probably of ancient Celtic origin. Its exact meaning is not known.

Data and facts:

13-9 BC:
According to the Roman novelist Florus: A Rhine bridge was constructed at “Bonna”. Bonn emerged from prehistoric history upon being mentioned for the first time in writing.

69 AD:
First mention of the Roman legionary fortress "castra Bonnensia" in the north of the city by the Roman historian Tacitus.

around the year 450 AD:
The last Roman units leave the Rhineland. It belongs to the Franconian empire from then onwards.
