Following the Steps of Ludwig van Beethoven in Bonn

The Beethoven tour tracks the most significant chapters of Ludwig van Beethoven’s younger years by visiting 13 of the sites of his childhood and youth in Bonn. The walking tour was designed by a working group organized by the “Citizens for Beethoven” society and co-sponsored by Glasfachschule Rheinbach, City Parkraum GmbH and Stadtwerke Bonn.
The sites include Beethoven’s home at Bonngasse 20 with its Chamber Music Hall, Haus zum Mohren (named "The Moor”), Saint Remigius Parish Church in Brüdergasse, the house at Rheingasse 24, the main building of the University (Lecture Hall 17), the Schlosskirche (Palace Church), the Zehrgarten/Market (at the Old Town Hall), the Münster (Minster Church, the former Minster School), the Beethoven Monument at Münsterplatz, Kaufhof Department Store (the former Breuning House), the Beethoven Concert Hall, the Beethon Monument (a play on the name Beethoven and the word Beton = concrete), the tomb of Beethoven’s mother in the Old Cemetery (Alte Friedhof), the old La Redoute ballroom and the Lippe Palace.

The Path of Democracy

The “Path of Democracy” consists of display boards with text and photos located at places of contemporary historical interest in the former government district in Bonn. The walking tour starts at the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (German National Museum of Contemporary History). The “shorter” tour takes about 90 minutes and leads past twelve sites on foot.
Other attractions, such as the Hofgartenwiese, the site of major demonstrations or the earlier party headquarters of the major political parties are not on the “shorter” tour.
In addition, 40 other places of historical and political significance within and beyond the former government district are marked by smaller display boards.
