A knight’s castle was mentioned in Miel already in 1140. The successor of today’s Rococo castle was a medieval fortress, which burned down in 1730. In 1767, Baron Maximilian von der Heyden gen. Belderbusch purchased the old knight’s castle in Miel. As a mighty chamberlain and minister of state of the electors of Cologne, the baron erected today’s manor-house in just four years. The architectonic jewel was an imitation of a hunting seat in a Louis XIV.-style. The garden hall of the Rococo castle is decorated with wall paintings, which are still in an original state.
The castle was inhabited until 1991 and was then renovated quite expensively for the exhibition “Riss im Himmel” in 2000. A golf course was erected on the lands around the castle. The castle itself is open to the public in most parts and can also be used for private festivities, such as weddings (there is a registry office right at the castle). In the former coach house next to the main building there is a restaurant with a beer garden today (closed on Monday).
