The water-surrounded castle Mauel was the core of the former settlement, a so-called “solid house” surrounded by water ditches. It was first mentioned in a document in the second half of the 16th century. The fortress originally had a square ground plan, which was expanded to the West later on. Like almost all solid houses in the region of Windeck it was built of “Grauwacke” quarry stones, which can be found here quite often. The fortress Mauel was restored in a loving way and in proper style and accommodates a wine tavern and a beer garden today.
