Ruins of the fortress Saffenburg

There is not much left from the fortress Saffenburg high above the Ahr Valley, but you have a wonderful view from there.

The fortress Saffenburg is said to be the oldest fortress at the Ahr. Already in 1074 a so-called Adalbert de Saffenberg was mentioned in a document. Later on, due to a wedding, the fortress became the property of the house von der Mark, and in 1784 it became the property of the ducal family von Arenberg. The fortress, which was maintained up until 1704, was destroyed according to the inhabitant’s wish (a visit of the ruins of a fortress is possible though). The little wall remains are on three levels on a steep, jagged rock. You can enjoy a wonderful view from the ruins of a fortress Saffenburg.
