The Benedictine Abbey Michaelsberg is located on a mountain peak in a height of 40 metres above the city of Siegburg. Its outer appearance reminds of a Baroque style, but its history reaches far back: In 1064, it was founded by Arch Bishop Anno of Cologne and then served as a monastery for more than 700 years. After the secularisation in 1803, it was used for military purposes as barracks, as a mental home and as a prison. Today, the abbey again is a monastery for the Benedictine monks and accommodates the youth hostel St. Maurus, the restaurant “Abtei-Stuben”, a hotel and a book and art store. A well-known product of the monastery is the traditional abbey liquor, which is produced according to a centuries-old recipe.
