In the nature reserve “Bergisches Land”, where the river Sieg is the most beautiful, you will find the recreation area “Windecker Ländchen”. The meandering sinuosities of the Sieg, the wide floodplains, the valleys and the huge forests (covering nearly 50 per cent of the area) are typical for the area. Wooded mountain tops with a height of 100 to 378 metres rise up from the Sieg valley; in between there are more than one hundred settlements, homesteads, street villages, hamlets and contemplative church villages scattered across the valley in a very picturesque way.
In Windeck the Westerwald, the Bergisches Land, the Siegerland and the Rheinland meet in natural harmony. An untouched and intact nature forms this nature and recreation area, which is situated at the edge of the population centre Cologne / Bonn and which has always been poor in terms of industry. The healthy climate, the clean air and the proverbial hospitality of the Windecker Ländchen invites visitors to go cycling, horse-riding, fishing, swimming, to play tennis or golf, to drive a carriage or to simply hike around the beautiful nature.
From the museum of local history in Altwindeck, which mainly reports about the eventful history of the ordinary people, a trail leads you to the symbol of the Windecker Ländchen: the old castle ruins of Windeck, which are more than eight-hundred years old. From here you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over the central Sieg valley. At the foot of the castle ruins there is the picturesque village of Altwindeck, which was awared several times already on the occasion of the competition “Unser Dorf soll schöner werden” (our village shall become more beautiful). The “pitch & putt” facility in the leisure park Windeck-Dattenfeld attracts all kinds of golfers. It is run by various golf trainers and offers a nine-hole course with an average length of 14 metres.
