Brühl Palaces

Augustusburg Palace is one of the masterpieces of rococo architecture in Germany. The master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun from Westphalia began to build the palace in 1725 on the instructions of Clemens August on the ruin of a moated castle dating back to the Middle Ages.

As of 1728 Augustusburg was designed as the opulent residence of the period by the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés. Balthasar Neumann provided the design of the magnificent staircase, which is a showpiece full of dynamism and elegance. UNESCO honoured these masterpieces in 1984 when it included the Palace of Augustusburg together with Falkenlust Palace and the Brühl Gardens on the list of the world cultural heritage sites.

The Baroque grounds were landscaped by Dominique Girard on the basis of a French model as of 1728. To the side of the Baroque garden Peter Joseph Lenné created wooded areas as of 1840 following the example of an English country garden.
